Discord

Connecting a Discord server lets the site give members roles for what they do here, and post session announcements into your channels. It's at Manage → Discord.

Connecting

Add Bot opens Discord to invite the bot to your server. Once it's in and verified, the server name and id are filled in and the rest of the page opens up. Unlink disconnects it again.

Roles the site assigns

Auto Assign Roles is a list of roles the site keeps up to date for you. Each row is a type of role with:

  • Role name as it appears in Discord.
  • Channel name and category, if the role should come with a private channel.
  • Hoisted (shown separately in the member list), mentionable, and a color.
  • Enabled — whether the site maintains it at all.

Update Server Roles applies the rules to everybody now, rather than waiting for the next time each member's roles are worked out.

Sessions can assign their own roles too — for reserving a place, attending live, or watching the recap for a set number of minutes. That's under Discord Options on the session itself, in Creating a Session.

Announcements

Message Channels decides what gets posted where. Add a channel, then pick which kinds of message go to it:

  • A session added, changed or canceled
  • A session going live
  • A recap becoming available
  • A track being submitted

One channel can take several kinds, and you can have as many channels as you want — announcements in one, submissions in another.

Default channel category is where any channel the site creates for itself ends up.

Members connecting their accounts

The site can only give somebody a role if they've linked their Discord account to their profile. Show Discord Connect Message puts a prompt in front of members who haven't linked yet.

You can also require a connected Discord account before anyone submits a track — that's a track submission setting on the session, in Session Features.

Keeping the server to your members

A Discord server is open to anybody with an invite. If you want yours to be for people in your group only, the Group Members row in Auto Assign Roles is the gate: the role it maintains — Site Member unless you rename it — goes to everybody who is in your group here and has linked their Discord account, and comes off them when they leave.

The rest is done in Discord, once:

  1. Switch the Group Members row on, so the role exists and the site keeps it up to date.
  2. Leave one channel open — a welcome channel is what most servers use. @everyone needs View Channel, Send Messages and Use Application Commands on it: a slash command needs all three, so somebody who can't post there can't run /connect either.
  3. Close everything else. Put your channels in categories, and on each category deny View Channel for @everyone and allow it for the Site Member role. Keep the channels synced to their category and anything you add later is closed by default too.
  4. Drag the bot's role above Site Member in Server Settings → Roles. A bot can't hand out a role that sits above its own.
  5. Say what to do in the welcome channel: run /connect, open the link it replies with, sign in, and the server opens up.

Update Server Roles then gives the role to everybody who has already linked their account, which is what you want if the server has been running for a while.

Somebody has to be in the server before the role can reach them, so the invite still comes first — they just won't see anything until they connect.

Two things to know:

  • Don't turn on Discord's Onboarding for a server you're gating this way. It asks for at least seven default channels with five of them open to @everyone, which undoes the lockdown.
  • Leaving your group takes the role away, so the server goes quiet for them without anybody having to remember. The setting below goes further.

When somebody leaves the group

Remove members from the Discord server when they leave the group is off unless you turn it on. With it on, leaving the group also removes them from your server, and they're told that before they confirm.
